Pregnancy changes your body in many ways, and one that few people talk about openly is the appearance of anal skin tags after pregnancy. If you have noticed a small, soft lump or fold around your bottom since having your baby, you are far from alone. Postpartum skin tags are common, they are harmless, and they are nothing to be embarrassed about.

In this guide we explain why pregnancy causes them, whether they will go away, how to care for the area while you recover, and when and how they can be safely removed.

Anal skin tags after pregnancy are common and harmless.

How common are anal skin tags after pregnancy?

Very common. Hemorrhoids affect a large proportion of women in late pregnancy and the weeks after delivery, and a good number of these leave a small fold of skin behind once they heal. That is why anal skin tags after pregnancy are one of the most frequent reasons new mothers book a consultation with us, often months or even years after giving birth, once they realise the “lump” hasn’t gone away. If you are wondering whether yours is a tag or a hemorrhoid, see anal skin tags vs hemorrhoids.

Why do anal skin tags appear after pregnancy?

Several things that happen during pregnancy and delivery put extra stress on the perianal skin:

1. Hemorrhoids in late pregnancy

The growing uterus increases pressure on the veins of the pelvis and rectum, and pregnancy hormones relax blood vessel walls. Add the constipation many women experience, and hemorrhoids become extremely common in the third trimester. When these hemorrhoids heal after birth, the stretched skin over them often remains as a skin tag.

2. Pushing during labour

The intense pressure of the pushing stage can cause swelling, small clots or tearing around the anus. As this tissue heals, folds of extra skin can be left behind.

3. Hormonal changes

Pregnancy hormones affect skin and connective tissue throughout the body. Many women notice new skin tags on the neck, under the arms or around the breasts during pregnancy for the same reason.

4. Postpartum constipation

Pain medication, iron supplements, fear of the first bowel movement after stitches, and disrupted routines all make constipation common after birth, which can aggravate the area further.

Do anal skin tags after pregnancy go away on their own?

It depends on what the lump actually is:

  • Hemorrhoids usually shrink significantly in the weeks and months after delivery as pressure and hormones return to normal.
  • Skin tags are permanent folds of skin. They may look smaller once swelling settles, but they do not disappear on their own.

A good rule of thumb: if the lump is still there, unchanged and painless, three to six months after delivery, it is most likely a skin tag. Not sure of the difference? Read anal skin tags vs hemorrhoids.

Caring for the area while you recover

In the early postpartum period the priority is healing, comfort and avoiding further irritation (the NHS advice on piles also applies postpartum):

  • Keep stools soft. Drink plenty of water (especially if breastfeeding), eat fibre-rich foods and ask your doctor about a gentle stool softener if needed.
  • Don’t strain. Raise your feet on a small stool on the toilet to make bowel movements easier.
  • Clean gently. Use a peri bottle with warm water or unscented wipes, then pat dry rather than rubbing.
  • Try sitz baths. Ten to fifteen minutes in a few centimetres of warm water soothes swelling and itching.
  • Wear breathable cotton underwear and avoid tight leggings for long periods.
  • Never cut, tie or freeze tags at home. DIY removal in this area risks infection, bleeding and poor healing, see why home removal is risky.

When is the right time to remove anal skin tags after pregnancy?

Skin tag removal is an elective procedure, so there’s no rush. We generally recommend waiting until:

  • You have fully recovered from delivery, including any tears or stitches
  • Postpartum hemorrhoids have settled, so we can see what remains
  • You feel ready, often around three to six months after birth

If you are breastfeeding, simply tell us at your consultation. Local anaesthetic is used only on the treated area, and we will plan your care with this in mind.

What does removal involve?

Removal of anal skin tags is a short, minor procedure:

  1. Private consultation, we assess the area and confirm the lumps are simple skin tags.
  2. Numbing, local anaesthetic is applied so the area is comfortable.
  3. Removal, tags are removed cleanly with sterile technique, usually in 15–30 minutes.
  4. Aftercare, you go home with clear written instructions.

Most mothers are back to their normal routine within a day or two. Our recovery timeline explains what to expect day by day.

Preventing new skin tags in a future pregnancy

You can’t completely prevent anal skin tags after pregnancy, but you can lower the chances of new hemorrhoids, and therefore new tags, next time:

  • Start a high-fibre diet and good hydration early in pregnancy
  • Stay active with walking or prenatal exercise
  • Don’t delay going to the toilet, and avoid sitting there for long periods
  • Ask your midwife or doctor about safe stool softeners if constipation starts
  • Use side-lying positions to rest and take pressure off the pelvic veins

Why many new mothers choose removal

  • Less itching and irritation
  • Easier hygiene after bowel movements
  • More comfort when exercising again
  • Feeling more like yourself after pregnancy

Frequently asked questions

Can I have anal skin tags removed while pregnant?

Elective removal is usually postponed until after pregnancy, once your body has recovered.

Will skin tags come back with another pregnancy?

A tag that has been removed will not grow back, but new tags can form with future pregnancies or hemorrhoids.

Is removal safe while breastfeeding?

Tell us you are breastfeeding at your consultation so we can plan accordingly; local anaesthetic is used only on the small treatment area.

How long after birth do anal skin tags after pregnancy usually appear?

Most women notice them in the first weeks after delivery, as swelling from hemorrhoids or tearing goes down and the extra skin becomes noticeable.
